Lollipop chainsaw girl12/8/2023 Lollipop Chainsaw inserts a handful of minigames - think zombie basketball and baseball - and enemies go all Super Mario when they die, sometimes yielding coins that can later be used to purchase even skimpier outfits for your already-underdressed heroine. There are other little touches to spice things up, as well. Their banter is high school jock and cheerleader girlfriend at its finest, and it's amazing the way Gunn keeps the humor fresh through the eight-hour campaign. The banter between Juliet and Nick is always interesting. Yet the game manages to be interesting because of the tongue-in-cheek touches that Suda51 and Gunn place here. Overall, the entire game structure is decidedly pedestrian, with no unique levels and few memorable enemies. There are far too many invisible walls to make occasional level exploration worthwhile, and collision detection and clipping issues occur frequently. There's an overdrive-style attack that can be charged up, and Juliet has a life bar that's represented by a streak of lollipops.īut gamers expecting Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden-of-old complexity will be left wanting there are few combos to be pulled off and few innovative level designs. One button activates Juliet's chainsaw, another controls her pom-pom melee attacks. Truth be told, there's very little invention or creativity in Lollipop Chainsaw's gameplay. Simply put: This is not a game that grandma wants to buy for her 14-year-old grandson's birthday.īut the overwhelming stupidity of Gunn's writing and the voice acting of Strong and "Smallville" alum Michael Rosenbaum (as Juliet's disembodied boyfriend Nick) make the game surprisingly enjoyable. Spinning on a stripper pole lets her kill zombies more effectively, and dying zombies love to hurl expletives at the girl. There are gratuitous shots of Juliet bending over in a skimpy cheerleading outfit. The simple, obvious satire of Lollipop Chainsaw is surprisingly refreshing at first, although it is stunningly lewd. But, more than likely, she's merely a vehicle for Suda51 and Gunn's twisted sense of humor, and they are not shy to show that. Sure, she could represent a giant step backward for gaming, the ultimate video game insult to females – and an insult to the multidimensional character of Sarah Michelle Gellar.
